Goa tiatr academy to be a reality on Feb 16

Ravindra Bhavan Margao, will see history being made on the 16th of February 2009, when legendary and well known tiatrist Master Vaz (Jose Francisco Vaz) will inaugurate the much desired Tiatr Academy in the presence of the Chief Minister Mr Digambar Kamat who will be the Chief guest for the auspicious occasion.

Veteran Tiatrist and the former speaker of the legislative assembly Mr Tomazinho Cardozo would be the president of the Academy which has been constituted for the development and encouragement of Tiatr in Goa.

The constitution of the academy is expected to go a long way in the improvement of the Tiatr in Goa, a unique Konkani art form, which has a history of over 117 years and survived the times without help from any state machinery.

The setting up of the Tiatr academy was a promise made by the Chief Minister Mr Digambar Kamat which he faithfully honored and the tiatrists were feeling gratified for the same, while hailing the academy which was actually long overdue given the history of the tiatr in the state of Goa. However there was widespread dissatisfaction at the budget allotted to the academy being a paltry 15 lakh and demanded much more keeping in mind the wide following that the tiatr has always commanded in Goa.

More than 2000 odd tiatr's are staged in Goa every year besides also traveling abroad  to the gulf, and Europe as also Canada and America where Goans flock to watch their traditional piece of the action.
