In a rare echo of the Goan voice, the chief Minister of Goa Mr Digambar Kamat, called upon Goans to start the work of preserving of the Goan identity and refrain from selling land to people from outside Goa. In a straight blunt statement the Chief Minister said, "one cannot sell his/her land and property to the foreigners and speak about protecting the Goan identity at the same time'. The chief Minister was speaking at a gathering of politicians , bureaucrats, freedom fighters and citizens during the state revolution day at Azad maidan on 18 June 2009.
The chief Minister also lamented that people in Goa were adopting an attacking stand on each and every issue facing the state and called upon an inclusive growth as the key to everything
The governor and the Chief Minister felicitated around 36 freedom fighters on the occasion, nearly half of them posthumously. Later they laid a wreath at the Martyrs memorial at Azad Maidan and paid glowing tributes to all the known and unknown people who made the supreme sacrifice for liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule.
Down south, speaking at the Lohia Maidan in Margao, the PWD minister Mr Churchill Alemao also highlighted the need to preserve the unique identity of Goans and said that it was important to preserve the hard earned freedom for Goa and Goans.
